How to really hack a 6 volt battery

THIS ARTICLE IS FOR ALL OF YOU WHO HAVE SEEN OR HEARD OF HACKING A 6 VOLT LANTERN BATTERY TO GET "AA" BATTERIES OUT OF IT. The truth is that once you open up a 6 volt battery, you will not find any AA batteries inside - at least not using EverReady, Duracell, or Energizer batteries. Here is what you will find:
  1. 1
    "F" Cell battery
Lets do a little math first to show the reality of voltage in batteries. Most singular AA batteries put out 1.5 volts. If you Multiply 1.5 by 4 - then you get 6 volts. You can achieve 6 volts by only using 4 battery cells wired in series. If you actually have 32 "AA" batteries in a 6 volt dell battery, then you will get 48 volts. Now I realize that you can run batterieis in parallel and in series, but lets talk basics here - if you run batteries in parallel, they tend to discharge each other. Do me a favor and test a single battery cell on a voltmeter - you will get 1.5 volts roughly.

    Eveready 6 volt battery
    Eveready 6 volt battery
Alright, so if you tried to open up a "Duracell", "Rayovac", or Eveready" 6 Volt lantern battery shown in the image below in the hopes of finding 32 "AA" batteris, then you were probably disappointed once you got the battery open. Now I realize that I did not use the brand available in the video, it is a Powercell 6 Volt Lantern dell latitude d630 battery, and I could not find one anywhere. If you can find one, it might very well have "AA" batteries in it - but other popular models do not. However, I still caution you to take two "AA" batteries with you and test the overall height of any 6volt battery on the market - the 6 volt batteries are shorter than two "AA" batteries stacked on top of each other!
  3. 3
Inside the 6 Volt lantern battery are actually four very long "D" shaped batteries. In the Eveready #1209 6volt battery that I used, the four battery cells found inside are size F. These batteries are about the same diameter as a D cell but about 1-1/2 times the length. They are used in other types of lantern, fence chargers and some special lighting batteries. See the image below to get an idea what is inside a standard 6 volt dell m1530 battery.
  4. 4
In some 6 Volt lantern batteries, such as the Duracell and Energize, there are 4 "D" cells connected in series to achieve 6 volts. The rest of the battery case is filled with foam.
  5. 5
You can use these "F" sized batteries in MAG flashlights, keyboards, or any other electronic equipment that allows you to stack "D" batteries.
  6. 6
So what is the point of hacking a 6 volt "D" lantern battery. Well if you need a bunch of "D" batteries that can be stacked together to run some electronic equipment, these 6 volt Lantern batteries only cost about $4.50 at Meijer, and you can save some money by using "F" batteries stacked in with your "D" batteries".
